Fantastic article, Ron. As I've been mentoring more of the next generation, I ask them what they want to do in 5-10 years. Identifying goals on that timeline is a significant challenge for many people, let alone a lifetime. I wonder...should we encourage people to set BHAGs for each decade? The nature of work is changing rapidly, and this trend is expected to accelerate over the next few decades. There is so much opportunity that has yet to reveal itself. Perhaps a set of shorter-term BHAGs might be easier to adopt and create more career agility. Food for thought.
It is fantastic food for thought - in a career planning sense, a short-term BHAG — maybe a big operational transition that usually takes 1-2 years - we need to recognize these as GIANT accomplishments at the individual level. Thanks for making the idea better - short-term BHAGs!
